Saaya Association has organized wheelchairs distribution ceremony and disability awareness seminar in collaboration with HANDS under the umbrella of Community Based Inclusive Development (CBID) Network Pakistan at District Layyah- Punjab. The ceremony coupled with awareness seminar was attended by persons with disabilities, parents, local community and local government officials.
District Layyah is at a distance of 550 km from the capital city Islamabad. It is very under developed area; people are illiterate, unaware and lack to have basic means of life. The huge numbers of persons with disabilities are living at their home without basic health, education and other facilities. The session was chaired by Mr. Nazir and started with the recitation of Holy Quran and then a girl (with disability) recited a Naat. After that, few community people expressed their concerns and experiences with the audience regarding people with disabilities.
Mr. Zulfiqar Cheema (District Executive Manger HANDS District Layyah) welcomed to all the honorable guests and government officials. He introduced HANDS Pakistan and its contribution for the community in District Layyah. He also shared that the huge number of persons with disabilities are living in this district in very bad condition with assistive devices.
Asim Zafar CEO Saaya Association shared the concept of disability and its problems, needs and solution. He
also shared that Saaya wants to contribute in improving the social economic, cultural condition of people with disabilities; such initiatives are only small step towards achieving the goal of equality and right based society. For permanent change, we need to think out of the box and need to ignite awareness campaign for changing lives for good. He also added that local Govt. should take some initiative specifically for their mobility because many of them still living in isolation at their homes. So it’s our responsibility to make them an effective part of this Society. He also suggested and requested to the DC to develop strong networking of NGOs, who are working in district Layyah
to provide wheelchairs collectively.
DC Mr. Sayed Wajed Ali Shah was very impressed and agreed to work with HANDS for persons with disabilities and he requested HANDS Layyah team for sharing data of persons with disabilities at district Layyah.Dr. Ameer Abdullah CEO Health Layyah also shown his commitment to work with HANDS for Person with disabilities and he also appreciated the unique work of HANDS.The distribution wheelchairs at District Layyah resulted in great stories being told of new lives ahead because of the wheelchairs.
