Training on the topic of „Gender and Parity‟ was organized by Saaya Association of Persons with Disabilities in collaboration with National Forum of Women with Disabilities (NFWWD) and Sight Savers International at SAAYA office Islamabad under the umbrella of CBID Network Pakistan.
Training started at 10:30 am with recitation of the Holy Quran. Ms. Saima Aslam (National Coordinator NFWWD) introduced everyone and briefed the participants about the main objectives and importance of this training. Most of the participants in this training were people who had never been to any training or workshop of this kind before. It was an inclusive training where women and men both participated and shared their experiences.
Workshop was comprised of different sessions. Ms. Maria Zia (Founder member NFWWD) started her sessions formally by giving a detailed lecture on what is disability and how does it affect a person‟s life. She highlighted that disability is not definable. Disability is a fact and determined by hurdles and barriers, which exists in environment. She described all the disability models and approaches.Ms. Abia Akram (CEO NFWWD) session was activity based, in which she highlighted the need to educate every person of society about disability. She enlightened gender based and disability based discrimination of society, where persons with disabilities especially women with disabilities face discrimination by society. There are many people who are not aware and able to get training likes us. We should not pity of our disability rather we should train, aware and inspire our next generation so that they can enjoy disability. Instead of models, we need more role models. It is our duty and commitment to our own selves to contribute to aware people with positive approach. We need inclusive environment and society.
Ms. Maria Qureshi (Provisional Coordinator Punjab NFWWD) discussed self management in her session. She highlighted that People usually show their strength and hide inner fears and weaknesses. There are not permanent scales for measuring emotions. We should give priority to our strength instead of weakness. It will help us in progress. We should have self-control and ability to share our emotions because it is very important for successful life.
Ms. Bushra Abdullah (Psychologist) enlightened „Sharing Thoughts‟ – What we have achieved understand the mindsets, role in life and the concept of “how to motivate your-self”. It was an activity-based session where she explained mindset and its types and motivational framework, which are goal, responses, efforts and strategies.
Ms. Afshan (Provisional Coordinator KPK NFWWD) explained leadership and concept of empowerment. She explained the importance of punctuality, time management and sincerity that are core elements of leadership. Empowerment is also important in this regard. It is dilemma of our society that we take everything materialistic and want reward for their contribution
Mr. Asim Zafar (CEO Saaya Association) gave closing remarks by highlighting the fact that life experiences cannot be study in the books only. We should make our life simple and peaceful by adopting the teachings that revealed to us 1400 years ago. We should work for humanity instead of only facilitating our own life. Every person should take care of him or herself if they want others to care for them. We should do work for our next generation, so that they cannot see the problems and hurdles which we are facing now.
Ms. Munazza Gillani (Country Director – Sight Savers International) was the Chief Guest of this event. She has introduced her organization and its work with the participants of the workshop. After a brief introduction with the participants, she appreciated those who attended training for the first time. She highlighted long term relationship of Sight Savers with Saaya Association.
In the end of the workshop, all participants got certificates from respected Chief Guest. Ms. Gillani took the opportunity to also visited Saaya Mobility Workshop and appreciated SAAYA‟s contribution in this regard.
